Electrical safety

Do not overload extension boards or adaptors

Connect only one extension unit or adaptor to each wall socket; use a separate fixed socket for high-power appliances.

Why it matters

Overloading or daisy-chaining extension units can overheat plugs, cables, and sockets, increasing electric-shock and fire risk.

Wrong action

Connecting one power strip to another or running several high-power appliances from the same extension unit.

Correct action

Use no more than one extension unit per wall socket and plug high-power appliances into separate fixed sockets.

What to do

  1. Unplug devices that are not needed.
  2. Never connect an extension unit to another extension or adaptor.
  3. Stop using any unit that is hot, loose, discoloured, or smells burnt.

If something happens

If an extension unit smokes or smells burnt, switch off the supply only if safe and move away. Call 999 if there is a fire.
