Why it matters

A child can pull a hanging cord and bring down a kettle or hot appliance, causing a serious scald or burn.

Wrong action

Letting a kettle, rice cooker, or multicooker cord hang over an edge or cross a child's activity area.

Correct action

Place the appliance securely at the back, arrange the cord as its instructions allow, and avoid strain at the plug.

What to do

  1. Place kettles and heated appliances on a stable surface at the back.
  2. Arrange cords so they do not hang over edges or form pull loops.
  3. Before use, check that children cannot reach the appliance, plug, or cord.

If something happens

For a hot-water scald, cool the area under running water. Do not apply toothpaste or oil or break blisters; call 999 for a serious burn.
