Call 999 after reaching safety

Leave the danger area first, then call 999 from safety and give the exact address.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-09

Call 999 after reaching safety. Wrong action: Making a long call while still in danger or giving only the building name. Correct action: Move out of immediate danger and call 999 with the full address and whether anyone is trapped. If escape is blocked, call from a safe room behind a closed door; do not wait to reach the street.

Why it matters

Stopping near smoke or fire delays escape, while an inaccurate address delays responders.

Wrong action

Making a long call while still in danger or giving only the building name.

Correct action

Move out of immediate danger and call 999 with the full address and whether anyone is trapped. If escape is blocked, call from a safe room behind a closed door; do not wait to reach the street.

What to do

  1. Leave only by a safe, smoke-free route; if blocked, shelter in a safe room behind a closed door.
  2. Call 999 immediately and state that there is a fire and whether you are trapped.
  3. Give the full address, floor, unit, and your location, then follow the dispatcher.

If something happens

Leave by stairs and close doors only when the escape route is safe and clear of smoke. If the corridor or all stairs are blocked by smoke or fire, shelter in a safe unit behind a closed door, seal gaps, and call 999 with your trapped location. Do not use lifts or return into danger for belongings.
