Child safety

Check that the cot mattress fits without gaps

Use only a correctly sized, firm, flat cot mattress that fits snugly on every side, and recheck it after making the bed.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

Check that the cot mattress fits without gaps. Wrong action: Use an undersized, soft, or displaced mattress that leaves a gap beside the cot. Correct action: Use only a correctly sized, firm, flat mattress that fits snugly against every cot side.

Why it matters

A gap can trap a baby's head, face, or limb, while a soft surface can obstruct breathing.

Wrong action

Use an undersized, soft, or displaced mattress that leaves a gap beside the cot.

Correct action

Use only a correctly sized, firm, flat mattress that fits snugly against every cot side.

What to do

  1. Remove pillows, pads, and loose bedding so the full mattress and cot edges are visible.
  2. Press along every edge to confirm the mattress is firm, flat, correctly sized, and snug against the cot.
  3. After fitting the sheet, inspect all sides again; stop using it and tell the employer if it shifts, sags, or leaves a gap.

If something happens

If an infant is trapped, breathing abnormally, or unresponsive, remove the danger and call 999 immediately.
