High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-08-22

Unsafe: Rushing into a smoke-filled corridor or returning for belongings. Check the corridor and escape route for smoke first; when it is safe to leave, close the unit door and do not return.

Why it matters

A closed door can slow smoke and fire, but entering heavy smoke can be more dangerous.

Wrong action

Unsafe: Rushing into a smoke-filled corridor or returning for belongings.

Correct action

Check that the corridor and stairs are safe and clear of smoke; when leaving safely, close the unit door and do not return into danger for belongings.

What to do

  1. Check the corridor and escape stairs for smoke or fire.
  2. Leave only by a safe route and close the unit door behind you.
  3. If routes are blocked, shelter in a safe unit behind a closed door and call for help; do not return into danger for belongings.

If something happens

Leave by stairs and close doors only when the escape route is safe and clear of smoke. If the corridor or all stairs are blocked by smoke or fire, shelter in a safe unit behind a closed door, seal gaps, and call 999 with your trapped location. Do not use lifts or return into danger for belongings.
