Child safety

Cover unused sockets with childproof covers

Fit suitable, secure childproof covers to unused sockets within a young child’s reach.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Cover unused sockets with childproof covers. Wrong action: Using tape or a loose cover that a young child can easily remove. Correct action: Use a cover suitable for Hong Kong sockets, insert it fully, and inspect it regularly.

Why it matters

A child inserting fingers or metal objects into a socket can suffer severe shock or burns.

Wrong action

Using tape or a loose cover that a young child can easily remove.

Correct action

Use a cover suitable for Hong Kong sockets, insert it fully, and inspect it regularly.

What to do

  1. Find every unused socket within the child’s reach.
  2. Install a suitable cover exactly as directed.
  3. Replace any cover that is cracked, loose, or missing.

If something happens

For smoke, fire, or electric shock, keep clear, isolate power only if safe, and call 999. Do not touch a casualty while they may still be connected to electricity. Once power is safely isolated, follow dispatcher first aid; if unresponsive and not breathing normally, begin CPR as instructed.
