Sharp object safety

Discard sharp can lids safely

Control the sharp lid immediately after opening, wrap it, and place it in a puncture-resistant container.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Left: a sharp lid is exposed in a thin rubbish bag. Right: tongs lower the lid into a rigid lidded container; close its cover after placement.

Why it matters

A loose lid can cut anyone handling rubbish and pierce a rubbish bag.

Wrong action

Leaving the sharp lid exposed or dropping it directly into a plastic bag.

Correct action

Use tongs to control the lid, fully cover the sharp edge with thick card or place it in a puncture-resistant rigid lidded container, then secure it for the household's disposal arrangement. Do not flatten the sharp edge or compress rubbish by hand.

What to do

  1. Prepare tongs and a closable puncture-resistant container and keep children away.
  2. Use tongs to place the lid in the container without touching its sharp edge; if wrapping instead, fully cover the edge with thick card and secure it.
  3. Close the container or confirm the wrapping is secure, then follow the household disposal arrangement; never compress rubbish by hand.

If something happens

For severe bleeding, apply continuous direct pressure with a clean cloth and call 999; do not touch the sharp object with bare hands.
