Child safety

Install stair gates securely

The employer should arrange a suitable stair gate installed to the manufacturer's directions; latch it after every passage and test the fixings daily.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Left: a pressure-mounted gate is loose at the top of stairs. Right: a screw-fixed gate is latched, with the child safely behind it.

Why it matters

An unsuitable or loose gate can collapse or open suddenly, allowing a young child to fall on the stairs.

Wrong action

Block stairs with a chair, box, or unsuitable gate, or leave the latch unchecked.

Correct action

The employer should arrange a gate suitable for its stair position and installed as directed. At the top of stairs use a screw-fixed gate, not a pressure-only gate. Latch it every time and check the fixings daily.

What to do

  1. Have the employer confirm the gate suits its position and arrange installation as directed; use only a screw-fixed gate at the top of stairs.
  2. Close and latch fully after every passage, then gently push to check that it holds.
  3. Check screws, fixings, frame, and latch daily; block child access and tell the employer if loose or damaged.

If something happens

If it loosens, block access and tell the employer; call 999 for a serious fall or head injury.
