Lock away button batteries

Seal every new and used button battery and lock it in a high cupboard; keep battery compartments secured with their screws.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

Lock away button batteries. Wrong action: Leave new or used button batteries in drawers, on tables, in bags, or behind a loose cover. Correct action: Seal and lock every new and used button battery in a high cupboard, and check product covers and screws.

Why it matters

A swallowed button battery can cause severe internal burns quickly, and a used battery can still cause harm.

Wrong action

Leave new or used button batteries in drawers, on tables, in bags, or behind a loose cover.

Correct action

Seal and lock every new and used button battery in a high cupboard, and check product covers and screws.

What to do

  1. Count loose new and used batteries and identify household products that contain them.
  2. Individually secure loose batteries and lock them out of a child's sight and reach in a high cupboard.
  3. Check remote-control and toy battery covers and screws; stop use and tell the employer if one is loose or a battery is missing.

If something happens

If a child may have swallowed or inserted one, do not induce vomiting or give food; call 999 or go to emergency care.
