Sharp object safety

Step back—never catch a falling knife

If a knife slips, let it fall, step back, warn people nearby, and pick it up only after it has stopped moving.

A hand reaching for a falling knife on the left and hands and feet stepped safely away as it falls into a clear area on the right

Why it matters

Trying to catch it puts a hand in the blade's path and may make the knife bounce or turn toward the body.

Wrong action

Reaching out by reflex or using a foot to stop a knife that is falling.

Correct action

Let the knife fall, move both feet away, and warn everyone nearby to stay clear.

What to do

  1. Release the knife as soon as it starts to fall.
  2. Step your feet and body back and warn people nearby.
  3. After it stops completely, pick it up safely by the handle.

If something happens

For a cut, apply direct pressure with a clean dressing. Call 999 for heavy bleeding, a deep wound, or bleeding that will not stop.
