Sharp object safety

Put knives away immediately after use

Store knives in a secure knife block, sheath, or safe place with the blade protected and out of children's reach.

High-priority reminderSharp object safetySource checked: 2026-08-19
An unbranded knife left at the kitchen counter edge on the left and the same knife with its blade fully enclosed in a fitted drawer sheath on the right

Why it matters

A knife at the counter edge, hidden in washing water, or loose in a drawer can be knocked down, reached, or cause a cut during cleaning.

Wrong action

Leaving an exposed blade near the edge, hiding a knife in dishwater, or dropping it loose into a drawer.

Correct action

After washing and drying it, return the knife to a stable block, sheath, or fitted drawer insert immediately.

What to do

  1. Move the knife away from the counter edge as soon as it is no longer needed.
  2. Wash knives one at a time; never hide one under dishwater.
  3. Dry and store each knife in its fixed place with the blade protected.

If something happens

If a cut causes severe bleeding, unconsciousness, or immediate danger, call 999.
