Child safety

Never leave a baby on a raised surface

Keep a baby within an adult's reach on beds, sofas, or changing tables.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Left: the adult turns away, leaving the baby alone on a changing table. Right: the adult stays beside the baby, keeping one hand on the baby while reaching for supplies.

Why it matters

A baby can roll or crawl suddenly and fall from a height.

Wrong action

Unsafe: Turning away and leaving the baby alone on an unguarded raised surface.

Correct action

Stay beside and supervise a baby throughout care on a bed, sofa, or changing table. Keep one hand gently on the baby while changing diapers or clothes on a changing table. Take the baby with you if you must leave.

What to do

  1. Check the care area and put supplies within reach first.
  2. Stay beside the baby on any raised surface; keep one hand gently on the baby during diaper or clothing changes on a changing table.
  3. If you must leave or fetch something out of reach, take the baby with you; never leave the baby on the raised surface.

If something happens

For injury, unconsciousness, or abnormal breathing, call 999; do not move a possible head or neck injury unnecessarily.
