Child safety

Remove broken or sharp toys

When a toy cracks, exposes a sharp edge, or sheds a small part, stop play immediately, collect the pieces, and isolate the whole toy.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

Remove broken or sharp toys. Wrong action: Tape over a sharp point and continue play, or leave a broken toy on the floor. Correct action: Stop use, collect every fragment, isolate the toy beyond reach, and tell the employer.

Why it matters

Sharp edges can cut skin and loose small parts can be swallowed or cause choking; covering damage with tape does not restore safety.

Wrong action

Tape over a sharp point and continue play, or leave a broken toy on the floor.

Correct action

Stop use, collect every fragment, isolate the toy beyond reach, and tell the employer.

What to do

  1. Move children away from the toy and fragments and stop anyone from continuing to play.
  2. Using suitable gloves or a brush and pan, collect and count every fragment and loose part.
  3. Bag the whole toy and pieces out of reach, then tell the employer so safe disposal or repair can be arranged.

If something happens

For serious bleeding, an eye injury, or possible swallowing, call 999 and keep the toy details.
