Electrical safety

Stay clear of fallen power lines

Treat every fallen, hanging, or damaged power line as live, keep well away, and stop others approaching.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

A helper keeps others away from a fallen power line and calls for help from a distance

Why it matters

A line can remain energised without sparks or sound, and nearby ground, water, or objects may also conduct electricity.

Wrong action

Moving the line with a hand, broom, or object, or approaching to see whether it is live.

Correct action

Move back to safety, warn others, and contact the electricity supplier and emergency services from a safe place.

What to do

  1. Stop approaching and do not touch the fallen line or anything contacting it.
  2. If already close to the line, keep your feet close together and shuffle away in small steps without lifting them; do not stride or run, and avoid water, rails, and vehicles.
  3. Keep others away, call 999 and the electricity supplier from safety, and follow their distance instructions.

If something happens

If someone remains in contact with the line, do not touch or pull them away. Keep clear, call 999 and the electricity supplier immediately, and follow instructions.
