Home fire safety and escape

Store aerosols away from heat and flame

Keep aerosol cans upright in a cool, ventilated, locked place, away from cookers, heaters, flames, and sparks.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

Store aerosols away from heat and flame. Wrong action: Keep insecticide, hairspray, or cleaner beside a cooker, in direct sun, or near a water heater. Correct action: Store upright as labelled in a cool ventilated locked place, away from flame, heat, sparks, and children.

Why it matters

An aerosol is pressurised: heat can rupture the can, and flammable contents can ignite near a flame or spark.

Wrong action

Keep insecticide, hairspray, or cleaner beside a cooker, in direct sun, or near a water heater.

Correct action

Store upright as labelled in a cool ventilated locked place, away from flame, heat, sparks, and children.

What to do

  1. Read each can's label for flammability warnings and storage directions.
  2. Lock it upright in a cool ventilated cupboard, away from cookers, water heaters, and sunny windows.
  3. Check for rust, dents, or leaks; isolate a damaged can and tell the employer.

If something happens

If a can is hot, swollen, leaking, or near fire, do not touch it; leave the area and call 999.
