Home fire safety and escape

Use another staircase if smoke blocks the first

Do not pass through smoke; return to a safe junction and use another smoke-free staircase.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-09

Left: smoke blocks the first staircase; do not enter. Right: that staircase door is closed and the helper moves to another smoke-free staircase.

Why it matters

Smoke contains heat and toxic gases that can quickly cause disorientation or unconsciousness.

Wrong action

Pushing into a smoke-filled staircase or using a lift as an alternative.

Correct action

Turn back before entering smoke and use another known staircase; if all are blocked, shelter and call for help.

What to do

  1. Look, smell, and check for heat before each corridor or stair.
  2. Retreat to the nearest safe junction when smoke appears.
  3. Use another stair; if none is safe, shelter behind a closed door and report your location.

If something happens

Leave by stairs and close doors only when the escape route is safe and clear of smoke. If the corridor or all stairs are blocked by smoke or fire, shelter in a safe unit behind a closed door, seal gaps, and call 999 with your trapped location. Do not use lifts or return into danger for belongings.
