Use clean, dry, heat-resistant mitts that fully cover the hands when moving hot trays, pots, or dishes.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Use dry oven mitts for hot cookware. Wrong action: Using a wet towel, apron edge, or damaged thin glove to lift hot cookware. Correct action: Clear the route, wear dry intact mitts on both hands, and place hot cookware on a stable heatproof surface.

Why it matters

Wet or thin cloth transfers heat quickly, while a loose cloth can slip or touch a flame.

Wrong action

Using a wet towel, apron edge, or damaged thin glove to lift hot cookware.

Correct action

Clear the route, wear dry intact mitts on both hands, and place hot cookware on a stable heatproof surface.

What to do

  1. Check both mitts are dry and undamaged.
  2. Clear children, clutter, and liquids from the route.
  3. Grip with both hands and set the cookware on a heatproof surface.

If something happens

First put the hot cookware down safely. Cool the burn or scald under cool running water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice, toothpaste, or oil, or burst blisters. For a large, deep, or facial burn or breathing difficulty, call 999 immediately without waiting to finish cooling.
