Home fire safety and escape

Do not enter a smoke-filled corridor

Check outside before opening; if the corridor is smoky or hot, stay inside, close the door, and call for help.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Do not enter a smoke-filled corridor. Wrong action: Opening the door and rushing out without checking, or holding it open to look. Correct action: Before opening, check for smoke outside and unusual door heat. If either is present, do not open; keep the door closed, seal gaps, and call 999 with your location.

Why it matters

Entering smoke can remove visibility, expose you to toxic gases, and let smoke enter the flat.

Wrong action

Opening the door and rushing out without checking, or holding it open to look.

Correct action

Before opening, check for smoke outside and unusual door heat. If either is present, do not open; keep the door closed, seal gaps, and call 999 with your location.

What to do

  1. Use the viewer and back of your hand to check for unusual door heat; do not open if there is heat or smoke.
  2. Only if no smoke or unusual heat is detected, open a small gap; close immediately if smoke appears.
  3. If escape is blocked, seal gaps, stay in a smoke-free room, and call 999 with your location; signal at a window only if safe.

If something happens

Leave by stairs and close doors only when the escape route is safe and clear of smoke. If the corridor or all stairs are blocked by smoke or fire, shelter in a safe unit behind a closed door, seal gaps, and call 999 with your trapped location. Do not use lifts or return into danger for belongings.
