Electrical safety

Keep cleaner away from electrical controls

Before cleaning a socket, switch, or appliance panel, disconnect power safely and apply a small amount of cleaner to the cloth, keeping controls dry.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

Keep cleaner away from electrical controls. Wrong action: Spray cleaner directly onto sockets, switches, plugs, or appliance controls. Correct action: Switch off and unplug when safe, apply cleaner to the cloth, and keep every control dry.

Why it matters

Liquid entering live parts can cause electric shock, a short circuit, or fire; direct spraying also drives moisture into gaps.

Wrong action

Spray cleaner directly onto sockets, switches, plugs, or appliance controls.

Correct action

Switch off and unplug when safe, apply cleaner to the cloth, and keep every control dry.

What to do

  1. With dry hands, switch the appliance off and, if safe, unplug it by holding the plug rather than pulling the cord.
  2. Put a little cleaner on the cloth; never spray a socket, switch, plug, or control panel directly.
  3. Wipe dry and check that no liquid entered a gap; if it did, keep power off and tell the employer.

If something happens

If liquid enters equipment or there are sparks or a burning smell, do not touch or restart it; leave, tell the employer, and call 999 if urgent.
