Child safety

Keep climbable items away from windows

Move chairs, low cabinets, boxes, and other stepping items away from windows, and keep approved window guards locked.

Why it matters

A young child may use furniture as a step and fall from a window. An insect screen does not prevent a fall.

Wrong action

Leaving a chair, storage box, or low cabinet beside an openable window, or relying only on an insect screen.

Correct action

Clear every climbing aid from the window area, lock the window guard, and have an adult check it regularly.

What to do

  1. Move chairs, boxes, and climbable furniture away from every window.
  2. Close the window and lock any openable approved window guard.
  3. Check the child's area daily for new objects that could be used as steps.

If something happens

After a fall from height, do not move someone with a possible head, neck, or back injury unless there is immediate danger. Call 999.
