Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Keep electric blankets flat and switch off before sleep. Wrong action: Using it folded, under heavy items, or leaving it on while asleep. Correct action: Lay it fully flat, check for damage, use only for preheating, and switch off before sleep.

Why it matters

Folding, trapping, or leaving it on overnight concentrates heat and can cause burns, damage, or fire.

Wrong action

Using it folded, under heavy items, or leaving it on while asleep.

Correct action

Lay it fully flat, check for damage, use only for preheating, and switch off before sleep.

What to do

  1. Flatten the blanket and cable while making the bed.
  2. Do not pile items on it during preheating.
  3. Before bed, switch off, unplug, and check the controller is not hot.

If something happens

For smoke, fire, or electric shock, keep clear, isolate power only if safe, and call 999. Do not touch a casualty while they may still be connected to electricity. Once power is safely isolated, follow dispatcher first aid; if unresponsive and not breathing normally, begin CPR as instructed.
