Keep used knives visible, wash them one at a time, and store them immediately.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-09-09

Keep knives out of washing-up water. Wrong action: Dropping knives into a full sink with other utensils and reaching in blindly. Correct action: Keep the blade visible, hold the handle, and wash one knife at a time with the edge away.

Why it matters

Cloudy, soapy water hides blades and can cause a deep cut when someone reaches in.

Wrong action

Dropping knives into a full sink with other utensils and reaching in blindly.

Correct action

Keep the blade visible, hold the handle, and wash one knife at a time with the edge away.

What to do

  1. Remove every knife before filling the sink.
  2. Hold the handle and clean from the spine toward the edge.
  3. Dry immediately and return it to a rack or locked place.

If something happens

For severe bleeding, apply continuous direct pressure with a clean cloth and call 999; do not touch the sharp object with bare hands.
