Severe weather and window safety

Keep off balconies and rooftops during thunderstorms

During warnings or nearby thunder, stay inside and postpone laundry, drain clearing, and rooftop work.

Critical safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

Keep off balconies and rooftops during thunderstorms. Wrong action: Going onto a balcony or roof to collect laundry or clear drains during lightning and wind. Correct action: Complete outdoor tasks beforehand; close the door and stay inside until safe.

Why it matters

Balconies and rooftops are exposed to lightning, strong wind, slippery surfaces, and flying debris.

Wrong action

Going onto a balcony or roof to collect laundry or clear drains during lightning and wind.

Correct action

Complete outdoor tasks beforehand; close the door and stay inside until safe.

What to do

  1. Bring laundry in and secure balcony items before weather worsens.
  2. Close household balcony doors and stay indoors when the warning starts; do not lock or block shared fire exits, including rooftop exit doors.
  3. Do not go out for water or objects; wait until the warning ends.

If something happens

If anyone is struck, falls, is trapped, or becomes unresponsive, stay in the safest indoor position and call 999; do not enter exposed areas to retrieve objects.
