Severe weather and window safety

Keep older people warm during cold weather

Check the forecast, add suitable layers, keep the room warm, and avoid long outings in colder morning and evening periods.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

A helper assists an older person with warm layered clothing and socks indoors

Why it matters

Older people may regulate body temperature less effectively, so cold surroundings can place extra strain on the body.

Wrong action

Relying on one thick item while ignoring head, feet, room temperature, or long early-morning outings.

Correct action

Use dry layers, keep the room warm, and confirm outing and heating arrangements with the employer.

What to do

  1. Check the Cold Weather Warning and forecast minimum.
  2. Dress the person in layers, adding a hat, socks, and coat as needed.
  3. Keep the room warm and ventilated and limit long outings at colder times.

If something happens

For persistent shivering, unusual response, breathing difficulty, or clear distress, move the person somewhere warm and alert the employer; call 999 if serious.
