What is it?

A cleaning sponge is a soft porous pad that absorbs liquid, wipes spills or carries cleaning solution. This entity focuses on the sponge body; an attached rough fibre layer is a scouring pad with a different function.

How to identify it

Look for a compressible resilient block with many small pores. If one side has a rough fibre web, that side is the scouring layer and may not suit scratch-sensitive surfaces.

Common confusion

Scouring Pad

A cleaning sponge is a soft absorbent porous block; a scouring pad is a rough non-metal fibre layer. They may be laminated together but the working sides remain different.

Wiping spills and cleaning compatible surfaces with water or correctly diluted cleaner.

Preparation or handling

Identify the soft sponge and rough scouring sides. Follow the surface and cleaner instructions, test discreetly, and keep sponges for different work areas separate.

Storage

Rinse thoroughly, squeeze out excess water and air-dry fully in a ventilated holder. Replace it if mouldy, smelly, crumbling or uncleanable.

Helper tip

The sponge side is softer but not automatically safe for every finish. Do not use an attached rough side on non-stick, glass or gloss finishes unless approved.
