How to Wash Bed Sheets and Pillowcases
Read labels, separate pieces, load loosely and dry every fold
Overview
Sheets and pillowcases can differ in fibre, colour and size. Check the care labels, group only compatible bedding, keep it away from linty towels or very heavy items, and respect the washer capacity for more even washing and drying.

- Washing machine and manual
- Ventilated line or suitable dryer
Cleaning steps
Step 2
Separate and sort compatible pieces
Open sheets and empty pillowcases. Separate colours and care requirements, and keep bedding away from lint-shedding towels.
Step 3
Treat stains as labelled
Check pillowcases, sheet edges and visible marks. Use only methods allowed by both textile and product labels and do not mix stain products.
Step 4
Load loose, suitable amounts
Do not roll sheets into a tight ball or fill the drum solid. Follow the machine manual; use its bedding cycle only when suitable.
Step 5
Measure and select the cycle
Dose detergent from its label. Choose a temperature, cycle and spin that every item in the load permits.
Step 6
Untangle and dry completely
Remove the load promptly and open tangled pieces. Spread in moving air or use a label-approved dryer setting; make the bed or store only when corners and folds are dry.
