Wash a Down Jacket

Down, shell fabric and water-repellent finishes vary; washing and drying must follow the actual care label and manufacturer guidance.
Tools needed
- Down-suitable cleaner
- Clean laundry bag if label permits
- White towels
- Flat drying rack
- Clean dryer balls only if permitted
Cleaning steps
Check label and damage
Read wash and drying instructions; inspect tears, leaking down and loose seams, and stop if damaged.
Empty and secure parts
Empty pockets, close zips and handle hook-and-loop or removable parts as the maker directs.
Use suitable cleaner
Use only the product-label amount of a down-suitable or maker-approved mild cleaner; never mix products.
Wash only as labelled
Use only the machine type and gentle programme allowed by the care label; avoid damaging agitation and do not machine-wash if not approved.
Rinse thoroughly
Complete rinsing as the maker and label direct until no obvious cleaner remains; never wring down.
Dry slowly as labelled
Only if allowed, tumble on low or no heat with clean dryer balls; otherwise dry flat, gently separating clumps during drying.
Confirm completely dry
Check every baffle inside and out is fully dry and loft is restored before wearing or storing.
