Why it matters

A slipping blade moving toward the body can cause a deep cut before it can be stopped.

Wrong action

Holding food in the air or drawing a knife toward the hand, waist, or another person.

Correct action

Stabilise the board, keep the free hand behind the blade, and make controlled cuts away from the body.

What to do

  1. Clear and dry the work surface.
  2. Place the food on a stable cutting board.
  3. Keep fingers behind the blade and cut away with controlled strokes.

If something happens

For a deep cut or bleeding that does not stop with firm direct pressure, call 999 and keep applying pressure with a clean dressing.
