Burn and scald prevention

Keep appliance cords away from table edges

Place kettles and heated appliances securely at the back of the counter and keep their cords where children cannot pull them.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

A kettle cord hanging near a child's chair on the left and a kettle secured at the back with its cord safely arranged on the right

Why it matters

A child can pull a hanging cord and bring down a kettle or hot appliance, causing a serious scald or burn.

Wrong action

Letting a kettle, rice cooker, or multicooker cord hang over an edge or cross a child's activity area.

Correct action

Place the appliance securely at the back, arrange the cord as its instructions allow, and avoid strain at the plug.

What to do

  1. Place kettles and heated appliances on a stable surface at the back.
  2. Arrange cords so they do not hang over edges or form pull loops.
  3. Before use, check that children cannot reach the appliance, plug, or cord.

If something happens

Cool the burn or scald under cool running water for 20 minutes. Do not use ice, toothpaste, or oil, or burst blisters. For a large, deep, or facial burn or breathing difficulty, call 999 immediately without waiting to finish cooling.
