Slip and fall prevention

Keep the walking aid within reach

Before sitting, rising, or toileting, place the correct walking aid securely by the user’s usual hand.

Standard safety rule

Last reviewed: 2026-09-09

Keep the walking aid within reach. Wrong action: Parking the aid across the room so the person must walk unsupported to reach it. Correct action: Park it within easy reach without blocking the path and keep brakes or rubber tips sound.

Why it matters

An aid placed too far away makes a person overreach or stand unsupported, increasing falls.

Wrong action

Parking the aid across the room so the person must walk unsupported to reach it.

Correct action

Park it within easy reach without blocking the path and keep brakes or rubber tips sound.

What to do

  1. Use the aid recommended for the person’s needs.
  2. Before sitting, place it where the usual hand can grip it.
  3. Before each use, check brakes, rubber tips, and floor stability.

If something happens

If someone has severe head or neck pain, cannot move, or is unresponsive after a fall, do not lift them; make the area safe and call 999.
