Child safety

Never leave a young child alone in the bath

Prepare everything before bath time and keep an adult within arm's reach throughout. Never leave, even for a moment.

Why it matters

A young child can drown quickly in a small amount of water and may be unable to call out. A phone call or towel is not a reason to leave.

Wrong action

Leaving a child alone in a bathtub, baby bath, or water container while turning away or leaving the bathroom.

Correct action

Prepare all supplies first and supervise closely throughout; if you must leave, take the child with you.

What to do

  1. Prepare towels, clothes, and all bath items before filling the bath.
  2. Stay within arm's reach and give the child your full attention.
  3. Drain the bath and empty buckets and basins immediately afterward.

If something happens

If a child is submerged, remove them from the water if safe and call 999 immediately. If not breathing normally, a trained person should begin CPR.
