Never leave a young child alone in the bath
Prepare everything before bath time and keep an adult within arm's reach throughout. Never leave, even for a moment.
Why it matters
A young child can drown quickly in a small amount of water and may be unable to call out. A phone call or towel is not a reason to leave.
Wrong action
Leaving a child alone in a bathtub, baby bath, or water container while turning away or leaving the bathroom.
Correct action
Prepare all supplies first and supervise closely throughout; if you must leave, take the child with you.
What to do
- Prepare towels, clothes, and all bath items before filling the bath.
- Stay within arm's reach and give the child your full attention.
- Drain the bath and empty buckets and basins immediately afterward.
If something happens
If a child is submerged, remove them from the water if safe and call 999 immediately. If not breathing normally, a trained person should begin CPR.
