Slip and fall prevention

Rise slowly and steady before walking

When getting up from a bed or chair, rise slowly and wait until balance is steady before walking.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-10-12

An older person rises slowly from a chair and steadies before taking a walking aid

Why it matters

Changing position quickly or stepping away before steady can lead to loss of balance and a fall.

Wrong action

Rushing the person to stand and turn, then walking before balance is settled.

Correct action

Sit securely, rise slowly, pause to feel steady, and take the walking aid before moving.

What to do

  1. Place both feet flat and sit securely first.
  2. Rise slowly using the agreed stable support.
  3. Pause for balance and take the walking aid before walking.

If something happens

If unsteady, help the person sit safely. After a fall, do not force them up and seek help under the care plan. For unresponsiveness, breathing difficulty, or suspected serious injury, call 999 immediately without waiting for the employer.
