Slip and fall prevention

Use the handrail and keep one hand free

Use the handrail on stairs and carry items in small trips so at least one hand stays free.

High-priority reminder

Last reviewed: 2026-09-12

An older person holds the stair handrail with one hand and keeps the other free

Why it matters

If balance is lost on stairs, a free hand can grip the rail immediately and reduce fall risk.

Wrong action

Carrying a large load with both hands, blocking the view and leaving no hand for support.

Correct action

Keep steps and sightlines clear, hold the rail, and carry small loads or ask for help.

What to do

  1. Turn on the light and clear every step.
  2. Hold the handrail and move one step at a time.
  3. Split loads so at least one hand remains free.

If something happens

If balance is lost, stop and call for help. After a stair fall or injury, avoid unnecessary movement, make the area safe, and call 999.
