Slip and fall prevention

Use secure anti-slip protection in bathrooms

Use a secure, well-fitted anti-slip mat or surface in the bath or shower area, keep it in good condition, and keep the floor dry.

Why it matters

Water and soap make bathroom surfaces slippery. A loose, curled, or mouldy mat can also cause a slip or trip.

Wrong action

Using a mat that slides or curls, or placing a towel on the floor as a substitute for anti-slip protection.

Correct action

Choose anti-slip protection made for wet areas that stays firmly in place, and clean and inspect it regularly.

What to do

  1. Fit an anti-slip surface where people stand in the bath or shower.
  2. Before use, check for movement, curled edges, damage, or soap film.
  3. After use, clean or hang a removable mat and dry the surrounding floor.

If something happens

After a bathroom fall, turn off the water and make the floor safe. Do not rush to lift someone with a possible head, neck, back, or hip injury; call 999 if serious.
