A large spill left in a Hong Kong flat walkway on the left and the same floor being dried with a mop on the right

Why it matters

Even a small amount of water, oil, or cleaning liquid can make a floor very slippery, especially for children, older people, and anyone moving quickly.

Wrong action

Leaving a spill in a walkway and relying only on a loose cloth or warning sign.

Correct action

Clean the liquid immediately, dry the whole affected area, and keep people away until it is fully dry.

What to do

  1. Ask people nearby to use another route for the moment.
  2. Absorb and remove all liquid with a cloth or mop.
  3. Check the surrounding floor and shoe soles for any remaining slippery area.

If something happens

If someone is seriously injured, unconscious, or in immediate danger after a fall, call 999.
