What is it?
A flat mop carries a removable or fixed pad on a flat head. Its shape differs from a string mop.
How to identify it
Look for a long handle connected to a thin, usually rectangular head and, often, a removable cleaning pad.
- Long handle
- Thin rectangular head
- May have a removable washable pad
Common confusion
A flat mop has a thin board-like head; a traditional mop normally has a bundle of strings or cloth strips.
Common Hong Kong household uses
Dry, damp or other floor wiping permitted by the mop and flooring instructions.
Preparation or handling
Remove grit, follow the floor instructions for moisture and cleaner, and use the pad assigned to that area.
Storage
Wash and dry the pad fully. Store the head and handle securely to prevent trips.
Helper tip
Do not assume wood or another moisture-sensitive floor can be wet-mopped. Check its care instructions.
What Ma’am or Sir may say
換乾淨拖布先用平板拖把拖地。The employer wants the assigned clean pad fitted before the floor is mopped.
