How to Clean Curtains
Read the care label and identify the fabric; never assume every curtain is machine washable
Overview
Curtains may be lined, coated, shrink-prone or professional-care only. Let the care label determine dusting, spot care, hand or machine washing, or professional care, and protect the heading and hardware.
Tools needed
- Vacuum upholstery attachment
- Clean white cloth
- Laundry bag when label permits
- Stable drying area
- Laundry product permitted by the label
Cleaning steps
Read the label and inspect construction
Confirm washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional-care symbols and check lining, coating, trim and weak areas.
Dust in place first
Use a low-suction upholstery tool top to bottom while supporting the fabric to avoid pulling.
Remove safely by the fitting
Remove only if it is floor-reachable and you can restore it correctly; detach permitted hooks and record the order.
Test and treat a small mark
Patch-test colourfastness in a hidden place using only a label-permitted method; avoid universal stain hacks.
Clean exactly by the label
Hand or machine wash only when permitted and use the specified process; send professional-care-only curtains to a suitable service.
Dry by label and reinstall
Do not wring or stretch. Rehang only when fully dry and the track and fittings are secure.
