How to Clean Window Screens
Confirm whether the screen is safely removable from indoors; treat fixed models gently in place
Overview
Screen designs and fittings differ. Remove one only as the manufacturer allows from a safe interior position. If removal requires leaning out, force or a fall risk, stop and use gentle in-place dusting or suitable professional help.
Tools needed
- Soft-bristle brush
- Vacuum soft-brush tool
- Two soft cloths
- Small amount of mild soapy water
- Stable indoor drying area
Cleaning steps
Identify the model and removal method
Check manufacturer instructions and fittings; do not remove if uncertain, damaged or requiring an outward reach.
Secure the window and work area
Close or secure the panel from indoors, clear the floor and prepare stable support.
Remove loose dust first
On the in-place or safely removed screen, use a soft brush or low suction from top to bottom.
Gently wash washable mesh
When manufacturer-permitted, use a little mild soapy water with a soft cloth or brush without pulling the mesh.
Rinse and dry thoroughly
Remove soap with controlled clean water, dry the frame and air-dry fully in a stable indoor position.
Reinstall and inspect
When fully dry, reinstall as instructed and confirm it is secure, flat and untorn; report damage.
