Clean Sneakers and Sports Shoes
Clean by material and section without soaking or high heat.
Overview
Check manufacturer care and materials first, then dry-brush, spot-clean and air-dry; never assume every sports shoe is machine washable.
Tools needed
- Soft brush
- Old toothbrush
- Microfiber cloth
- Small basin
- Material-suitable cleaner
- White towel or paper towel
Cleaning steps
Check material and maker guidance
Identify upper, sole and trim materials; use the manufacturer guidance to choose moisture and method.
Remove parts and dry-brush
Remove laces and removable insoles, then brush dry mud and grit from upper and sole.
Patch-test first
Test a small amount of suitable cleaner on a hidden area and check for colour or shape change.
Clean the upper gently
Work in small areas with a barely damp cloth or soft brush; avoid soaking seams, bonds and special materials.
Clean the sole separately
Use a suitable brush in outsole grooves and keep sole dirt away from the upper.
Remove residue and moisture
As material permits, wipe residue with a clean barely damp cloth and blot dry; do not soak.
Shape and air-dry
Use a suitable shoe form or dry paper and air-dry fully in shade with ventilation; avoid heaters and strong sun.
