Chemical safety

Ventilate the area while using cleaning products

Before using bleach, sprays, or strong cleaners, read the label, open a window or run extraction, and keep ventilation operating during and after use.

Why it matters

Mist or vapour from some products can irritate eyes and breathing, and exposure increases in a small enclosed room.

Wrong action

Spraying or using cleaner in a small closed bathroom until the smell becomes strong.

Correct action

Establish airflow to the outside first, use only the labelled amount, and never use smell alone to judge safety.

What to do

  1. Read the original label for ventilation and protection instructions.
  2. Open a window, run extraction, or keep a clear route to ventilated air.
  3. After finishing, leave the treated area and ventilate as the label directs.

If something happens

For eye or breathing irritation, stop and move to fresh air. Rinse exposed eyes or skin with water; call 999 for breathing difficulty.
