What is it?
Cling film is normally sold on a roll for wrapping or covering food. Materials and heat limits vary, so a clear appearance does not mean it can be heated.
How to identify it
Look for clear flexible film on a cutter box labelled cling film, plastic wrap or food wrap, with food-use directions.
- Clear flexible film
- Normally supplied on a roll with a cutter
- Food and heating uses are defined by the package
Common confusion
Aluminium Foil / Baking Paper (Parchment Paper)
Cling film is clear and flexible; aluminium foil is opaque metal; baking paper is food-grade paper. They are not interchangeable.
Common Hong Kong household uses
Wrapping or covering suitable food as the package permits. Use in a microwave only when explicitly labelled microwave-safe and follow the directions.
Preparation or handling
Follow stated temperature and food limits. For microwave use, Hong Kong official guidance advises preventing direct contact between the film and food.
Storage
Keep in the original box away from high heat, flame and sharp objects.
Helper tip
Do not use conventional cling film in an oven or on a hob. Microwave suitability is not universal.
What Ma’am or Sir may say
用保鮮紙包好,微波爐用要先睇包裝。The employer wants the food covered, but heating is allowed only after the exact package is checked.
