What is it?
A steaming rack uses short legs or another support to raise a food container so steam can circulate without the dish sitting in the water.
How to identify it
Look for a platform that supports a dish, short legs or an expandable frame, and a size that sits securely inside the wok or pot.
- Platform supports a dish
- Raises the dish above water
- Must fit the wok or pot securely
Common confusion
A steaming rack raises and supports; a fine-mesh strainer separates small particles from liquid.
Common Hong Kong household uses
Holding a plate or bowl while steaming food in a wok or pot.
Preparation or handling
Check that the rack and dish are stable. Add enough water for steaming without covering the dish base, following the recipe.
Storage
Cool, wash and dry fully. Secure moving parts on folding models.
Helper tip
A steaming rack supports a dish; it is not a fine-mesh strainer for separating small food from liquid.
What Ma’am or Sir may say
放個蒸架入鑊蒸餸。The employer wants the rack placed securely in the wok before the dish is steamed.
