How to Clean and Dry Pillows
Sort by filling and care label; not every pillow can be machine-washed or sun-dried
Overview
Foam, fibre, feather, and down can have different washing and drying limits. The care label and maker guide control every machine, dryer, and sunlight decision.
Tools needed

- Care label or maker guide
- Soft-brush vacuum attachment
- White cloth
- Laundry bag if permitted
- Drying rack
- Dry towels
Cleaning steps

Identify filling and cover
Read the label and separate foam, fibre, feather, or down. Distinguish a removable cover from the pillow core.

Remove loose surface soil
Gently plump; if permitted, use low suction and a soft attachment on the surface.

Clean only approved removable covers
Follow the cover label. A washable cover does not make the filling washable.

Wash the core only when allowed
Machine- or hand-wash only with explicit label permission and a suitable load; do not invent a cycle.

Remove moisture as directed
Do not wring foam, feather, or down; use only the maker-approved pressing or machine method.

Dry by the material rule
Support the pillow in moving air. Use a dryer or direct sun only when the label explicitly permits it.

Check the centre and restore shape
Confirm there is no cool damp core or clumping before gently reshaping and fitting a clean case.
Common mistakes

Machine-washing every pillow

Treating the core like its cover
✓ Correct actionWash only the approved cover; follow separate core instructions.

Wringing or rushing with high heat
✓ Correct actionUse a low-stress drying method permitted by the label.

Refitting a case around a damp centre
✓ Correct actionKeep ventilating until the pillow is dry throughout.
