How to Wash Duvet Covers and Mattress Protectors
Read every label, sort, and size the load; the two bedding types are not interchangeable
Overview
Duvet covers and waterproof or functional mattress protectors can require different care. Each label controls washing, spinning and drying.
Tools needed
- Care-label reference
- Separate laundry hampers
- Suitable detergent
- Washer if permitted
- Drying rack
- Clean storage area
Cleaning steps
Inspect and prepare
Close only zips directed to be closed, loosen tangles, and check damage; pretreat only as the label permits.
Sort by colour and construction
Separate colour-transfer risk, heavy pieces, and functional coatings instead of bundling all bedding together.
Use a suitable load
Leave room for the items to move. Split an oversized load and do not invent a cycle or temperature.
Wash and dry by each label
Use only the permitted method for each group; dryer, line drying, and heat are not universal.
Use or store only when fully dry
Check seams, corners, elastic, and coated areas before making the bed or folding into clean storage.
Common mistakes
