How to Clean a Mattress Surface
Identify the mattress and care label before low-moisture spot care and complete drying
Overview
Mattress ticking, removable covers, and internal foam can have different rules. Read the maker guidance first. A zipper does not prove the whole cover or mattress is washable.
Tools needed
- Manufacturer care guide or blank label reference
- Soft-brush vacuum attachment
- White absorbent cloths
- Dry towels
- Maker-permitted unlabeled cleaner
- Fan
Cleaning steps
Strip and identify
Remove bedding and protector. Check the exact model, sewn tag, and whether the cover is explicitly removable and washable; stop if unsure.
Vacuum only if permitted
Use low suction and a soft attachment over the surface and seams without scraping or pulling the ticking.
Blot a small spill promptly
Press with a dry white cloth to lift liquid. Do not rub or force moisture into foam or inner layers.
Pretest as directed
Only when the mattress guide permits, put a minimal compatible product on the cloth and test an inconspicuous area.
Treat a small spot with little moisture
Lightly blot a small area with a barely damp white cloth. Do not soak, rinse, steam, or remove a cover by assumption.
Ventilate until fully dry
Air the area and use a fan if helpful. Replace only dry protectors and bedding after the surface and seams are completely dry.
