How to Clean a Bathtub
Identify the bath material, use a compatible gentle method and remove all residue
Overview
Acrylic, enamel and other bathtub surfaces do not share one universal cleaning method. Check manufacturer care guidance, test a hidden spot, and avoid abrasive tools, excess water and unverified chemical recipes.
Tools needed
- Soft sponge or lint-free cloth
- Clean-water container
- Absorbent cloths and squeegee
- Manufacturer-approved non-abrasive product
- Soft-bristle brush for textured areas
- Gloves required by the label
Cleaning steps
Identify the bathtub material
Check model, installation or maker guidance to distinguish acrylic, enamel or another surface. Ask the employer if uncertain.
Ventilate and empty the bath
Remove toiletries, hair and loose soil, keep the drain clear and leave the bath stable and free of standing water.
Spot-test the compatible product
Test only a manufacturer-permitted non-abrasive product in a hidden area. Stop for discolouration, dulling or softening.
Clean sections with soft tools
Start at cleaner areas with a soft sponge or cloth. Use only a soft brush on textured zones; never steel wool or a hard scraper.
Remove all product residue
Use clean water or the maker-specified method. Do not mix products or leave wastewater in the bath or on the floor.
Dry and inspect the surface
Dry the bath, rim and surrounding floor. Confirm no slippery film remains and report cracks, peeling or leakage.
