Overview
Handrails, handles and switches are frequently touched and may also be an elder’s immediate support. Keep a safe support available, prevent slippery residue and follow both material and product directions.
Tools needed
- Separate soft cloths by area
- Clean water
- Original surface-compatible cleaner
- Clean dry cloth
- Label-directed gloves
Cleaning steps
Keep a support available
Clean only one rail section at a time and maintain another stable support or pause traffic.
Check material and condition
Identify metal, wood, coating or plastic. Stop and report looseness, cracks or sharp edges.
Remove visible soil first
Wipe from cleaner toward dirtier areas with a barely damp cloth; keep liquid away from switches and joints.
Use product only as labelled
If a cleaner or disinfectant is needed, use one compatible product as directed. Never mix or spray directly onto the surface.
Rotate clean cloth faces
Fold and change cloth faces often. Keep toilet-area cloths separate from other rooms.
Dry and inspect completely
Dry rails, handles and switch surrounds; return to use only when secure, non-slippery, non-sticky and residue-free.
