How to Clean Glass and Mirrors Properly
Six steps for dust, fingerprints and water marks
Overview
Confirm the surface, coating and frame first, then test in an inconspicuous spot. Use a small amount of cleaner with clean soft cloths and dry the edges. This guide covers only indoor surfaces safely reachable while standing on the floor.
Tools needed
- Two or three clean microfibre cloths
- Clean water
- Glass cleaner approved by the product label and surface instructions
- Small squeegee (optional)
- Dry towel to protect the sill or cabinet
Cleaning steps
Step 2
Remove dust and protect below
Gently lift dust from the surface and frame with a clean dry cloth; place a towel below to catch drips.
Step 3
Test a small hidden area
Put a small label-directed amount of cleaner on the cloth and test. Stop if the area changes colour, clouds or the film lifts.
Step 4
Wipe in small sections
Work top to bottom. Do not spray a large amount toward mirror edges, frames, sockets or appliances.
Step 5
Remove the moisture
If using a squeegee, overlap passes slightly and wipe its blade; otherwise dry with a second clean microfibre cloth.
Step 6
Check streaks and finish
Check in side light, re-wipe only marked areas, then dry edges, sill and any drops on the floor.

- Colour-code cloths so kitchen grease is not transferred to mirrors.
