How to Clean Soft Toys by the Care Label
Read the label and construction before surface cleaning or an approved wash
Overview
A soft toy may contain batteries, a sound unit, glued trim or filling that cannot be wet-washed. Read the care label and inspect the construction. Hand- or machine-wash only when permitted, then dry the inside and outside completely.
Tools needed

- Care label and manufacturer instructions
- Clean soft cloth
- Soft brush
- Mesh laundry bag or clean pillowcase
- Compatible mild detergent
- Clean towel and ventilated drying place
Cleaning steps

Read the label and inspect
Check whether washing, machine washing, bleaching and drying are allowed. Look for loose seams, holes, glued trim, electronics and non-removable accessories.

Choose the permitted method
Use only a slightly damp surface cloth for a surface-clean-only or electronic toy. Hand- or machine-wash only when the label clearly allows it.

Remove dust and spot soil
Brush dust gently and dab a mark with a label-compatible product. Test an inconspicuous area first; do not rub hard or soak the filling.

Protect during washing
For an approved machine wash, remove detachable accessories, use a mesh bag, and select the labelled cycle and product. Keep hooks, zips and sharp items out.

Remove excess water gently
After label-compatible rinsing, press with a clean towel. Do not wring, pull ears or limbs, or distort the filling.

Reshape and dry fully
Restore the natural shape and dry in a ventilated place as directed. Check the core, thick seams and attachments are fully dry and secure before use.

Practical tips
Tips for helpers
- Record the trim and fur direction before washing so the shape is easier to restore.
- Turn a thick soft toy during air drying so every side gets airflow.
Tips for employers
- Keep the care label and product instructions instead of removing the only wash information.
- Specify professional care or surface cleaning for sentimental, complex electronic or unidentified toys.
