Steps

Step 1
Cut the potatoes
Peel and cut the potatoes into 4 cm chunks, rinse, and place in a pot.

Step 2
Boil the potatoes
Cover with water, bring to a boil, and cook over medium heat for 18 minutes until tender.

Step 3
Mash the potatoes
Drain and mash with 20 g butter, 100 ml milk, and half the salt.

Step 4
Prepare fish and vegetables
Pat the fish dry and cut into 4 cm pieces; dice the carrot and drain the peas.

Step 5
Start the white sauce
Melt 35 g butter in a saucepan over medium heat, add flour, and stir for 1 minute.

Step 6
Thicken the sauce
Whisk in 400 ml milk gradually and simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce coats a spoon.

Step 7
Add fish and vegetables
Add fish, carrot, and peas and cook gently for 5 minutes, stirring carefully to keep the fish intact.

Step 8
Season the fish filling
Fold in parsley, black pepper, and the remaining salt, then transfer to a roughly 23 cm baking dish.

Step 9
Top with mashed potato
Spread the mash from the edges inward to cover the fish filling completely.

Step 10
Add the cheese topping
Mark ridges with a fork and scatter the Cheddar evenly over the mash.

Step 11
Bake the fish pie
Preheat the oven to 200°C and bake for 22 minutes until bubbling and golden and the fish reaches 63°C.

Step 12
Rest before serving
Rest for 8 minutes so the sauce settles before serving.
Common mistakes
- Small fish pieces break apart during stirring.
- An under-thickened sauce makes the pie watery.
Tips
Boneless white fish is easier for children and older diners.
Fold gently to keep the fish pieces intact.
